Attachment Theory in IPT


Attachment theory, developed by John Bowlby and later expanded by Mary Ainsworth, is a psychological, evolutionary, and ethological theory that examines the importance of “attachment” in regard to personal development. Its primary focus is on attachment style and relationships, especially with others, particularly in long-term relationships, between parents, care givers, children, and romantic relationships. 
During our workshops, you will briefly reflect on the research and evidence of Attachment Theory. How attachment theory posits that the quality of early attachment in relationships has profound implications for later development, influencing emotional regulation, social relationships, and even mental health.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy Groups (IPT-G) for Perinatal Depression 

🧠 Overview 
This workshop will explore the application of Interpersonal Psychotherapy in a group format (IPT-G) to support individuals experiencing perinatal depression. IPT-G is a structured, evidence-based approach that focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and social support to alleviate depressive symptoms. The group format offers a unique opportunity for shared experiences, peer support, and collective healing.

This extended refresher workshop offers a deeper, more intensive exploration of the Role Transition focal area, supporting practitioners to refine their formulation skills, therapeutic decision‑making, and intervention accuracy when working with clients navigating significant life changes. 
Participants revisit the essential competencies for this focal area, with a strong emphasis on clinical nuance, interpersonal mapping, and skilful therapeutic pacing. The session blends conceptual refreshers with demonstration, guided discussion, and experiential practice.

This advanced refresher workshop offers a deeper, more focused exploration of the Sensitivities focal area, supporting practitioners to refine their ability to recognise, conceptualise, and respond effectively to heightened emotional and interpersonal sensitivity within the therapeutic relationship and the client’s wider social world. 
Participants will revisit the core competencies for this focal area, strengthening their capacity to work with vulnerability, emotional intensity, and relational triggers while maintaining therapeutic steadiness and empathy. The session integrates conceptual refreshers, demonstration, guided discussion, and experiential practice to enhance precision and confidence in IPT delivery.
